Parkinson’s Disease

Parkinson’s disease is a neurological disease characterized by the loss of nerve cells in certain parts of the brain. This loss of cells can lead to problems with movement such as muscle stiffness, tremors and difficulty walking and moving. Parkinson’s disease can also cause sleep, mood and cognitive problems.

Symptoms:

The early signs of Parkinson’s disease may include:

  • mild tremors in one hand
  • muscle stiffness
  • and slow movements.

Over time, these symptoms may worsen and other problems may develop such as difficulty walking and moving, a forward-leaning posture and loss of control over voluntary movements.

Treatment:

There is currently no cure for Parkinson’s disease. However, there are medications and therapies that can help alleviate symptoms and improve quality of life. It is also important to maintain a healthy diet and stay physically and mentally active.

Advice:
  • Offer your support and understanding to the person with Parkinson’s disease and their family.
  • Encourage the person to follow their treatment and participate in activities they enjoy.
  • Pay attention to the person’s needs and offer help with daily activities if necessary.
  • Be patient and understanding when the person has difficulty moving or speaking.
  • If you are close to someone with Parkinson’s disease, take care of yourself and seek support to help manage stress and emotional exhaustion.
